Hike

Close By (within 20 minutes drive)

Henllan –Cross the bridge & find parking on the side of the road opposite the derelict house. Head up stream past waterfalls and native woodland. Depending on rainfall you’ll find a nice swim spot as the river widens. Continue across fields to the road, turning left here & following your nose with an OS map should bring you back around in a nice loop, passing the old steam railway before heading into another section of woodland which drops down once more to the river’s edge.

Coed Y Foel – Woodland Trust owned woodland. Marked trails around ancient fern covered Oaks & young mixed woodland, alternatively there are plenty of paths to make up your own route.

Cenarth Falls – En-route to Cardigan, park either side of the bridge (this side is free!) & take the boardwalk for a short stroll up the well-maintained boardwalk, passing falls on the Teifi river. Can be an easy, flat bimble or make it into a longer circular. A couple of cafes, the coracle (a traditional fishing boat) museum & pub for rehydration.

Fynonne Woodland & Falls – A Co-Op owned woodland with waterfall (swimmable, but more of a dunk). A flat(ish) 20min stroll will take you directly to the falls; or follow easy to navigate forestry trails for a more adventurous 3-mile (or longer if you feel fit) hike, some steep sections with rewarding views of the valley.

A bit Further (within 40 minutes drive)

Coast Path – Please see our beach recommendations. Starting from any of them will ensure a scenic but often strenuous walk along the Pembrokeshire/Ceredigion coast path. The most accessible section that we know of is the section North of Aberporth.

Brechfa Forest – Offering well maintained trails through plantation woodland as well as some more unusual tree species. Marked trails from an easy 1 mile to a strenuous 5.5 miles. Check Natural Resource Wales website for details. A good pub in Abergorlech serves tasty treats.

Newport – is a small but lively town with a vibrant art/craft scene, cafes & a large sandy beach. Parking at Parrog & heading South a short distance along the coast path, you’ll find a foot path heading inland. This crosses a couple of fields & the main road before rising up into the hills for spectacular views over the bay. A scan of the OS map will enable a nice circular walk back around, down to the estuary to the car park.

Dinas Head circular is always a favourite & very easy to follow even without a map. We usually park at Pwllgwaelod Beach which tends to be better parking & has a pub. The walk climbs up reasonably steeply for the first third, offering nice views over the water to Fishguard and back to Newport, but also inland to the Preselis.

Ty Canol Nature Reserve – A small parcel of ancient woodland, indicative of the temperate rainforest which once covered the Western side of the UK. Walk though twisted oaks covered in lichen & moss, the forest floor littered with boulders, this place feels as old as time. From here you can continue on to Carnedd Meinion Owen for far reaching views of the Pentre Ifan burial chamber & the coast.

Rosebush Quarry – Find a spot in the community owned Tafarn Sinc car park & head left up the track behind, past a row of cottages on your left. This leads into the old slate quarry. Keep your eyes peeled for a small path off to the right for a cold water swim in a deep quarry pit. Then head further on for walks along good trails all the way up to the ridge of the Presslis. Alternatively, park at the top car park near Foel Eryr, a nice option if you fancy a pub stop halfway round.
